There are certain skills which are essential for everyone. They are so important that they may be the life saving aspect in a certain situation. Swimming is one of those skill which is very important. It is mandatory that everyone needs to learn how to swim(in my opinion).

We think it wouldn’t matter, but even if it doesn’t help you, you can save others. In this blog I am going to share how I learned to swim in 36 days.

The whole blog is divided into:

  • The start
  • My Routine
  • Techniques
  • Basic Skills Required for Swimming
  • Final Thoughts

The Start

It was at beginning of this year, that, I decided to learn how to swim. It was part of my new year resolution( which usually dies out with in ten days for others😋😁) I am very happy that I was able to go to the end(Learn). I went to the near by swimming pool and got my self registered. I started going to the pool everyday from then on.

My Routine

On the first day, I was made to hold by breath. It was done in the following way. First, I take a deep breath and dip into water and try to hold as much time as possible. This is done like many times. After this, I did the following. I dip down and rise up instantly.(I don’t know why I did that though, I was told to do that😁)

This process continued for two to three days. I was able to develop a little bit. I was able to hold out for more time than before. Let me say this, It will increase as time goes on.

Next, I learned how to float. I was instructed to hold on to the wall and float while holding my breath for as long as I can. This let my lung capacity grow, even though it was for a little bit.

After getting familiar with floating, I started to do leg pedaling (kicking), by staying in place. I did this by holding the wall the same way as I did for floating. This went on for another two to three days. I became very comfy with floating and pedaling. I then moved on to the next step.

I started using kicking pad (given by my instructor). Until now, I did the breathing techniques, kicking and floating at 3 feet depth. I moved to 5 feet, to use the kicking pad. I used the kick pad and continued to pedal for about 1–2 weeks. At the end of this time I was pretty efficient with pedaling.

The only thing left was to start using my hands and learn the freestyle.

In swimming there are 8( I knew only four until recently😋😅)

Techniques

  • Freestyle/Front Crawl
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Sidestroke
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Combat Side Stroke
  • Trudgen

You can do the research if you like to know about them. Anyways, I started to learn free style in the 5 feet region of the pool. I practiced for another 2 weeks. I became well versed with the technique. I was able to glide without needing to hold my breath(being able to breathe by turning head). I was able to go for longer distances without stopping in the middle. I still did practice in the 5 feet region for another 3–4 days. Later, I moved to 14 feet region after learning cycling (which keeps you steady on water like standing on land for rest or breathing).

I was about to be taught other techniques, but as you know, the whole situation of the current year. I was forced to stop my training. I was not feeling good about that at first, but I got to accept the reality.

During this whole process I learned that there are 5 basic skills, that one has to know as for him to swim.

Basic Skills Required for Swimming

  • Breathing technique
  • Gliding with your face in the water (taking air from by turning your face to the side)
  • How to coordinate various body parts during movement
  • Stroke styles/swimming techniques
  • Cycling(which keeps you steady on water like standing on land for rest or breathing)
  • Diving

Even though I was able to learn only one technique. I am confident, that I can manage myself in a situation, which involves swimming. I am determined to learn the other techniques as well after everything gets back to normal.

Final Thoughts

I was able to learn how to swim in roughly about 36 days. I think I am just a normal guy. If I am able to learn within that short amount time, I think you can learn it as well. You just need the motivation to start and keep moving until you complete what you started. I am really happy, that I decided to learn swimming. I think you would be happy as well, if you start to learn swimming.
