In these last seven months, I had so much time that I doubt that I will ever get it again. I was mostly free apart from the online classes. I needed some form exercise, So I was in deep thought on what I should do, that will not only let me be in shape but also has other benefits. It might be anything I was not sure what I wanted, so I was in a dilemma. Until I stumbled upon boxing!!

LOL

The thing is that I watch anime and I mean a lot. So I was watching this particular series called “Hajime no Ippo”. It is a series about boxing. If you want to know about it you can easily find it on the internet. I was watching the show. I didn’t realize what I wanted was right in front of my eyes. A couple of days later, while in the middle of a training episode, it suddenly struck me, that if I start boxing, I can not only get into a good shape but also learn how to protect myself. It was an ideal activity that I could ask for. We can’t start boxing just like that. We need the plan, the equipment and what not. I mentioned what I used and how I planned below.

THINGS I USED

So I looked up the internet for some tutorials. I was lucky enough to find some awesome videos. I can practice alone but I needed a sparing partner. Well, What do you know, I had the right guy for that role — My brother. He has a black belt in karate. I almost got everything. All that I needed was some boxing equipment — Gloves, bands, pads.

MY PLAN OF ACTION

JAB

Using the left hand to punch is known as a jab. In reality it depends on your dominant hand. If you have your right hand as dominant hand then you will jab with your left. If your left hand is dominant then you will jab with your right hand. Although it is very rare to see the later. For me my right hand is dominant.

When I started out my jabs were very weak. They didn’t have any impact. So, I worked my left hand. Everyday I did punches with only my left hand. I completely forgot that I have a right hand during that whole session 😋. No seriously, It did happen many times. After some time I observed an increase in the power behind my jabs.

Task completed.

CROSS

Using the right hand to punch is known as a cross. As I was right handed, I had a considerable amount of power, when compared to my left. After increasing my power in left hand. I started training with both hands. At first, it felt difficult or you can say uncomfortable, using both hands. I was so accustomed to using my left hand, man was it uncomfortable. Like this I slowly increased the amount of training for my right along with the left.

COMBINATIONS

Basically numbers are used to represent the combinations. They are as follows:

  1. Jab
  2. Cross
  3. Left Hook
  4. Right Hook
  5. Left Upper cut
  6. Right Upper cut
hook

Combinations:

1–2–3 (Jab-Cross-Left hook)

1–2–3–2 (Jab-Cross-Hook-Cross)

1–2–5–2 (Jab-Cross-Left uppercut-Cross)

1–6–3–2 (Jab-Right uppercut-Left hook-Right hand)

2–3–2 (Right cross-Left hook-Right cross)

1–1–2

These are some of the combinations. When it comes to combinations, it is mostly up to you. You can come up with any combination, if you want.

TRAINING

I practiced the above moves and combinations in my training. I had my brother put on the focus mitt and I used to do the combinations. Along with the combinations there is two other important thing.

DODGING: People think that boxing is all about punching and getting punched. It is not what you think. Dodging is very important when it comes to boxing. When you are on a professional level, the punching power is on a whole other level. Just one punch can knock the living daylights out of you. So if you want to avoid getting knocked out you need to be able to dodge.

BLOCKING: You need to be able to be block the punch in case you are not able to dodge it. You can do it any way. The purpose is to avoid getting hit. This is going to be an important factor in your match.

blocking with your fists and dodging simultaneously

SPARRING

I had my brother be my sparing partner. He is a karate black belt so he already has some experience in the way of fighting. So I couldn’t ask for better. We had our sparing rounds after our training. We sparred every day.

At first we only sparred for one round. Slowly we increased the rounds and reached 4 rounds of sparring. One round lasted for 3 minutes. 1 minute of rest in between rounds. It may seem a little, but it is very tiring. I had to develop my stamina. I jumped roped every day 1000 reps which is just extreme in the beginning. When I researched online I got to know that 5000 reps is the normal range. I had my mind blown away. Like bruh😱!!!

CAUTION

I am having a separate section for this because, if you are thinking of starting to boxing then there is one thing you should keep in mind. Never get angry if you get hit😡. When you are angry you will lose your form. If you hit with rage there is a chance that you might hurt your fists due to poor form. I am saying this because I experienced it first hand. You definitely don’t want to hurt your hands.

Second thing, I want you to do. It is the eyes of your opponent. Always maintain eye contact with your opponent. You will know where he will be attacking and you can defend yourself. Only hit on the face. Mainly on the jaw, because you can knock out your opponent very easily if you hit him on the jaw. You hit on the body to make your opponent to let his guard down.

REST

Rest is very important😴😴😴. You need to give your body some time for your body to recover. Get lots of sleep and be hydrated. It helps your body. You will grow stronger. Lot of people make a big mistake by not giving their body the rest it needs. I don’t want you to do that.

BENEFITS I FOUND AFTER I STARTED BOXING

  • Better Reflexes
  • Increased Stamina
  • Boost in Confidence
  • Increased Determination

FINAL THOUGHTS

I am happy that I started to box. By boxing I was able to get into a better shape and was able to open up potential. Although I am training on my own right now. I am thinking of getting a coach for myself in the future. If you ask me whether to start boxing or not, I would definitely say that you need to start boxing. You will not regret that decision I promise you.

If you have anything to say please write in the comment section😊
